The ALEC-Leadership Option is a multidisciplinary curriculum designed to prepare students for positions in a wide range of fields. The 120-hour curriculum focuses on interpersonal communication skills, effective leadership within group dynamics, and leadership capabilities within various contexts in preparation for community roles.
What You’ll Learn
Graduates of agricultural leadership, education and communication – Leadership Option will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of leadership theories, models, and behaviors to solve problems in agricultural and environmental sciences fields and beyond.
- Develop competence to apply leadership skills at the individual, team and organizational/community levels.
- Develop critical thinking skills to analyze and evaluate leadership issues in complex and global environments.
- Develop a level of self-awareness as well as the cognitive and emotional ability to effectively work with and develop people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
- Develop and implement a personal plan for transfer of knowledge, skills, and behaviors gained to career/professional life via a guided capstone internship.

Leadership Standout Courses
ALEC 102: Interpersonal Skills for Leadership
Introduction to the principles and practices of positive interpersonal relationships for leadership development. Self-awareness, awareness of others, effective interpersonal communication, and the building of trust relationships as a basis for understanding and developing leadership.
ALEC 202: Foundations of Leadership Theory and Practice
In small groups, students serve as pro-bono, in-house leadership consultants to an organization of their choosing. They assess leadership development needs of the organization and develop a leadership training and development solution for the organization.
ALEC 302: Dynamics of Effective Leadership in Organizations
Students in groups develop a community intervention related to local community challenge for 6 weeks.
